Donnée – Wordplay Wednesday™ 09/20/17

Two to Tango … One to ROCK!

Inspiration. Intuition. Instinct. Insight. Awaken your writing ideas with a song and a dancing …

DONNÉE (dô nāʹ) n. – [French] an incident, idea, etc. that serves as an author’s starting point or inspiration for a novel, play, etc. [WW #130]

OMG! I have those ALL the time … unfortunately, so does someone else – first – or it isn’t necessarily a great thought … sigh.

Why stick to novels or plays? Certainly, starting points for any endeavor would qualify as a donnée; and don’t think you’re limited to just one

My “book ideas” folder is FULL of one-line données, and even a few that have a mini-outline. Some are novels, others non-fiction and all, interesting subjects; none inspiring me to dance with them.

An Aha! moment, however, came as I chatted on the phone with radio DJ friend, Bill Gardner, about a Rock & Roll memorabilia article I was writing. Voilà! With a jitterbug sidestep, the Blast from Your Past book series donnée popped into my head.

As much as I love working on the BFYP series, it’s obvious I won’t become a millionaire from its modest proceeds. More of a legacy than a money-maker, its writings inspire my heart, but not my bank account. So, I’ll continue to ponder, seeking the donnée with dollar signs attached; or even better, the marketing donnée that makes BFYP a commercial success.

The world is full of billionaires who had just one truly great donnée. I’ll keep trying ‘til my muse hits me over the head with mine. How about you? Good luck … and Rock On!
Word Challenge: DONNÉE. It might take two to Tango, but it only takes one inspirational donnée to make life worthwhile. Take a donnée-break and mull a few ideas as you fit it into your week of Rocking writings.

Write first for yourself … only then can you write for others. (L.Rochelle)

Wordplay Wednesday™ March 22, 2017 – Nepotism

Family Matters …

NEPOTISM (nepʹɘ tizʹɘm), do you know it derives from the French for nephew? Over the centuries, népotisme eventually scaled to include, n. – favoritism shown to relatives, esp. in appointment to desirable positions. [WW #104]

Meet Huey, Dewey & Louie Duck!
Pretty self-explanatory. And for my purpose, a thin ruse to offer some blatant nepotism … simply known as shameless self-promotion.

Today, I’d like to bring your attention to Penchant for Penning’s brother and sister sites, BlastFromYourPast.net and 39AndHoldingClub.com, respectively. I promise this won’t take long …

We’ve had excitement in the PFP camp as we launched another book this week, in the Blast from Your Past! series. Book 2 – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The Swinging Sixties is finally published. In eBook format initially, it will publish in print format in April.

Pure nostalgia, The Swinging Sixties will alternately tug at your heartstrings, tickle your funny bone, and ultimately get your toes tapping to the music that defined Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll.

More importantly, it peeks behind the mic of the men and women who brought you the best and the worst music of the decade. Available in eBook format; print edition to follow in April.

Book 1 – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The First Five Years 1954-1959 on Amazon in eBook and print formats; and signed print copies on the BFYP site.

Have some fun sauntering down Memory Lane! Buy the eBook edition and offer your review (hopefully 5-star) and nostalgic notes on Amazon, or send your comments directly to me. Selected remarks will appear in the print book!

And at 39 and Holding Club today, we’re celebrating (which we do often) “As Young as You Feel Day”! 39AHC adopted this day as its signature holiday, so everyone “of a certain age” can ignore the young’uns and simply celebrate the wit and wisdom of being young at heart. Join us! Make your next birthday an UN-birthday with a 39 and Holding Club membership card!

Word Challenge: NEPOTISM. I’ve just hit you with a nepo-bomb … kinda like photo-bombing via blog. Think about that as you fit nepotism into your week of related writings.

Write first for yourself … only then can you write for others. (L.Rochelle)

Wordplay Wednesday™ July 27, 2016 – Orlop

Cruisin’ with the Oldies Rock & Roll Radio Ambassador

By late July we’re thinking about sitting neck-deep in anything with cool water … lake, stream, preferably ocean … but even the bathtub will do.

The open waters of the ocean call to me – I dream of cruising from port to port, spreading the joy of Old Time Rock & Roll to everyone I meet. A Boomer’s fantasy, for sure. My yacht awaits …

ORLOP (ôrʹläp) n. – the lowest deck of a ship with four or more decks. [WW #70]

I would settle for three decks … oh hell, when you have absolutely no dollars to pursue your dream, you may as well dream big – I’ll take four. Each with a bar and a jukebox! Yes, even the orlop.

Dreams can come true. Perhaps not as you first envision, but a reasonable facsimile. As proof, after eight very long years, I am finally poised to publish (before Holidays) Book 2 in my Blast from Your Past series about pioneering Rock & Roll Radio Disc Jockeys. On its heels, a revitalized Book 1 (The First Five Years 1954-1959) will shimmy its way onto Amazon’s virtual bookshelf.

It’s rarely easy and often daunting, to doggedly chase a dream. If you don’t though, you’ll always wonder what would have happened if you had. Only one life – live it. Even if your dream is the orlop of your life, for a while.

While writing, thoughts of selling a million books or even enough to pay for my time, has never been a focus. I simply want to document some of the wild-‘n’-crazy true tales behind the microphones of our pioneering Rock & Roll Radio stations – before they disappear in the dissipating airwaves of time.
