Obnubilate – Wordplay Wednesday™ 11/13/2019

A Word of Doubtful Clarity

No need to adjust screen--it's a fuzzy dinner!
Everything a little fuzzy during the Holidays? We have a word for that …

OBNUBILATE (äb nōō’bɘ lāt’) vt. – to make unclear, indistinct, vague, etc. [memories obnubilated by the passage of time] (n. – obnubilation). [WW #242]

To be serious, I can think of no instance in fiction or non-fiction that I would use this word. However, I’ll bet you can! Perhaps I’m not in a creative mood.

Don’t let me stop you from turning your writing into genius prose this week, to use obnubilate in an inventive turn of phrase.

Perhaps your murder mystery character babbled to the investigating officer, to the point of obnubilation. Or (in real life) your student struggled to qualify his/her essay POV, with obnubilated results. (Return the paper with obnubilated scribbled in the margin notes and watch with concealed amusement as confusion plays over the student’s face. A great learning experience!)

Word Challenge: OBNUBILATE. It’s awkward and ambiguous while defining the indefinable … a wonderful challenge as you fit obnubilate into your week of incisive writings.

Learning knows no prejudices or boundaries, and it isn’t fattening! Expanding your mind is a no-cost, simple joy. Do you feel that way too? What’s your inspiration? Share your creative genius and Wordplay Wednesday comments below.

Darkle – Wordplay Wednesday™ 12/12/18

‘Tis the Season to be …

… Light, bright and merry! However, weather—inside and out—can hang like a pall over your thoughts and stall the brilliance of your creativity. Somewhat like …

DARKLE (därʹkɘl) vi. – 1) to appear dark or unclear; 2) to grow dark and gloomy.  [WW #194]

Winter harbors darkness even in the daylight, as ominous clouds teeming with rain and snow hover low over our heads, threatening with a darkle day. (Well, I’m in Southern California, so not so much—but certainly everywhere else!)

Isn’t it perfect synergy that the Holiday Season’s sparkle and twinkles help light our way through a darkle moment before the sun wriggles through, or the dusk of early night gives way to twilight.

Are you an early riser to take advantage of the quiet to write? Perhaps your thoughts will sparkle, in spite of the darkle before the dawn of the sun, or the bright light of your literary genius rises.

Yes, darkle is a marvelous word with compound uses.

Word Challenge: DARKLE. How can you sprinkle some twinkles into the shadows of your mind’s corners, as you fit darkle into your week of enlightening writings?

Learning knows no prejudices or boundaries, and it isn’t fattening! Expanding your mind is a no-cost, simple joy. Do you feel that way too? What’s your inspiration? Share your creative genius and Wordplay Wednesday comments below.

Mansuetude – Wordplay Wednesday™ 11/14/18

Holidays: Frantic or Fun? Your Choice …

Moving into the Holiday Season, we generally affect one of two attitudes. Either frantic frenzy with shopping, parties, decorating, cooking, and did I mention parties? 😊

For others, the Season brings calm planning, peaceful thoughts of gratitude, heartfelt karaoke Holiday songs, goodwill toward our friends and foe alike, and a certain …

MANSUETUDE (manʹswi tōōdʹ) n. – gentleness; tameness. [WW #190]

Hmmm, a word that just makes you want to say, “Ahhhhhh.” Your attitude of mansuetude for the next couple of months can foster happy thoughts and seasonal good will that could take you through the New Year. Wouldn’t that be a nice beginning to build on?

Tip for a calmer, more meaningful New Year of mansuetude: Do you have a large list of fave songs on your music device or on the radio? (Yes, the radio is still alive and thriving.)

Choose a song as a theme for each month of the New Year; a melody and/or lyrics that give you a mental boost and puts a little jiggle in your walk with feel-good energy.

Have even more fun pairing it to the month, like: January – “I Can See Clearly Now” (Johnny Nash1972); or July – “Summer Breeze” by Seals & Croft. Just sway back ’n’ forth in the balmy air ... you simply can’t be in a bad mood after that. Though these are both “moldy oldies,” the music spectrum is wide and long … have fun!

When you feel life is getting the better of you, hum your tune of the month. Or better yet, belt it out at the top of your lungs … generate a calming or joyful mood of mansuetude.

If nothing else in your life, you control your strength of mind and choice of mansuetude over chaos. Try it. Send a ripple into the Universe and watch it gently rock your world. If no one feels it but you, that’s okay too. It’s gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day

Word Challenge: MANSUETUDE. Let your inner reflection take a deep breath, as you fit mansuetude into your week of peaceful writings.
