FICTIVE (fikʹtiv) adj. – 1) of fiction or the production of fiction; 2) not real, imaginary, feigned  [WW #210]

 

While relatively common, fictive isn’t seen much in a story of fiction … only as a description of the work. Consider slipping it into a character’s vocabulary, polishing their creatively expressive dialogue.

Even in your own casual conversation, how often do you slip fictive into the chat when discussing your books and other writing? I’d guess never … well, that’s okay, neither have I. So what are you waiting for?

Work fictive into your vocabulary for an inventive touch to your hefty arsenal of factual and fictive lexes.

When writing dark, intense fiction—or even likewise nonfiction—help your reader pull out of the darkness once in a while with a word designed to break the tension. Make them stop reading and peer intently at …

FULIGINOUS (fyōō lijʹɘ nɘs)) adj. – 1) full of smoke or soot; 2 dark, dusky. [WW #204]

And perhaps another literary term for a smokescreen! Fuliginous is a fun word for fiction writers. If you have a crime-solving character, for instance, who is rather pompous and/or exceptionally learned and wordy, fuliginous plays right into his or her affected vocabulary.

Example: Thurman peered up into the old fireplace chimney. “The house may be old and dilapidated, but this fuliginous fireplace has seen recent use. It’s unlikely the murderer entered this way.”

Word Challenge: FULIGINOUS. Give it some thought, as your characters develop their personalized vocabulary, and fit fuliginous into your week of creative writing.
