Cousinage – Wordplay Wednesday™ 05/30/18

We Are Family …

Summers are great for BBQs, weddings, and all sorts of fun family happenings. If you’re fortunate, there are a few attendees your own age, and/or some you’ve “known forever.”

Whatever your stage in life, often those you shared a childhood with have formed a familiar …

COUSINAGE (kuzʹɘn ij) n. – the state or condition of being a cousin, the relationship between cousins, kinship; 2) a group of cousins or of relatives. [WW #166]

Not all are lucky to enjoy the closeness of family, whether a mile or a thousand miles away. I thank our family values for the bond between cousins by birth, who are best friends by the grace of our cousinage.

Like me, everyone should have at least one cousin whose closeness qualifies as a pseudo-brother or sister. If you’re not so blessed, take heart …

They say we can’t choose our family … I beg to differ! “Cousin Brucie”* Morrow of New York City’s pioneering radio broadcasting fame, created an enviable cousinage with his fans that endured endearingly for more than fifty years. (*Read his story in Books 1 & 2 of Blast from Your Past!: Rock & Roll Radio DJs 1954-1959 and The Swinging Sixties.)

It’s comforting when some of our friends are accepted into a close cousinage, as well. I am honored that three of my best friends have stuck around to listen to me whine and carry on dramatically, through an extraordinary number of years; well beyond the scope of many family members. Cheers to finding family in your friends.

Cousins are many. Best friends are few. What a rare delight to find both in you. ~ Anonymous

Word Challenge: COUSINAGE. Whether biological or chosen, our kooky and comforting extended cousinage make life worth the effort. Let them know how much it means to you as you fit cousinage into your week of familial writings.

Crapulous – Wordplay Wednesday™ 05/23/18

Some Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Jolly moods often last only as long as you’re not perusing social media. Like me, have you developed an intemperance for inane and pompous social media? More than once it’s caused me to become …

CRAPULOUS ( -lɘs) n. – 1) characterized by intemperance, esp. in drinking, debauched; 2) sick from such intemperance. [WW #165]

Okay, yes, I know the dictionary pairs it with drinking; but crapulous was just too fun to pass up for Wordplay Wednesday, to apply it to anything that ruins your day through excess.

By its very utterance, crapulous lightens a mood spoiled by prolonged irritation, or yes, perhaps a three-martini“ business” lunch. And it’s just as effective for pretty much anything that sickens you, don’t you think?

So, here it is, Hump Day, and just when you thought the week was bleak, you’ve learned a new word that roles off the tongue in a silly sound to make you smile. Go ahead, say it! You’re welcome. Now you don’t feel so crapulous, do you?

Word Challenge: CRAPULOUS. Few words can accurately name our over-indulgences and excesses with levity. Be creative as you fit crapulous into your week of intemperate writings.

Regnant – Wordplay Wednesday™ 05/16/18

And They Lived Happily Ever After!

Are “we” ready with tiaras and ceremonial swords for this weekend’s finery event? Of course we’re speaking in the Royal “we” as the world will surely come to a halt while the latest Royal Wedding unrolls in all its splendor and Markle Sparkle. I did not make that up … is it a Cinderella beauty movement … a majestic marijuana strain … a royal cocktail? Yep, too all.
Dunkin’ Donuts’ new “Royal Love Donut

We have the picture-perfect word to put you in a regal mood. Not one heard often in casual conversation, raise your head and glass high in your own humble kingdom and think …

REGNANT (-nɘnt) adj. – 1) reigning, ruling (a queen regnant); 2) of greatest power, predominant, 3) prevalent, widespread.  [n. regnancy; WW #164]

Whether enthralled with the fictional family of Downton Abbey or real-life fairy tales of Buckingham Palace, we never seem to get enough of regnant pomp and circumstance. Is this a Downton or Buckingham royalty quote? “I will never be happy with anyone else as long as you walk the earth.” Answer.

Will you host a formal gala and view the public airing of the impossibly saccharin Harry and Meghan’s lavish nuptials? Or eschew the regnant queen’s family to hoist a pint at a local pub, like many of us commoners?

Word Challenge: REGNANT. Even if your crown comes from Burger King, revel in its monarch history and consider the regal family’s burdens to bear, as you fit regnant into your week of imperial writings.
